Our History

Four dedicated fly fishermen, Dale Miller, Gene Snelling, Dick Berube and Stan Faller, were returning home to Newark in 1990 after a meeting with the Columbus-based Central Ohio Flyfishers. One of them popped the question: "Why don't we form our own club in Newark and avoid these trips back and forth to Columbus every month?"

The idea caught on and, with some planning, their first meeting was held in one of their homes. Several new people attended this meeting and the Land of Legend Flyfishers Club was founded. Meetings were held over the next year at different homes on different days of the month. A fly tying class was started in 1991 at the home of Stan Faller with Gene Snelling as instructor. This first class had nine students.

Arrangements were made during the next year to hold meetings at Zerger Hall, the senior citizens center for Licking County. Three meetings a month are still held there. The general business meeting is conducted on the second Monday of the month; fly tying is the third Monday; and rod building is on the fourth Monday. The club supplies tools and materials for most of these classes.

Over the years the LLFF has been asked to demonstrate the art of fly tying and casting to many organizations. Some of the most prominent are: Becoming an Outdoor Woman, sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources; the Licking County Parks Department; the D.A.R.E. program, sponsored by the local police departments; Greenwings, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited; Boy and Girl Scouts; 4-H clubs; churches; and the Newark Parks Department.

Two of the original members, Dale Miller and Bill Richards, initiated the Senior Citizens Fishing Derby about 10 years ago. This event is for all senior citizens of Licking County and any handicapped persons. Over the years it has grown and in 2004 we had about 200 participants, including about 20 in wheel chairs. The LLFF provides a large portion of the volunteer help and support for the seniors at this event. We also furnish manpower for the local Trout Derby and Catfish Derby, sponsored by the Newark Parks Department.

Several of the members have wanderlust and travel to adjoining states to fish for trout. In recent years we have gone to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. These trips are always enjoyed by those who attend, and fish are caught!

The Land of Legend Fly Fishers Club is well organized with over 50 active members. We enjoy various activities as a group throughout the year and end the season each year with a special banquet at a prominent catering and party house.
